A GUEST AT THE GREAT MOHICAN GATHERING OF 1999. MP: Yeah, Chimney Rock. E: Oh, yeah. It was shot in Vancouver and I talked to Wes after he finished it. All three of us stood there with them. It's about me and this guy his name is Christoph and he's from France. They promote it. That and the part where Alice jumps from the cliff are some of the finest in the film! So, that's what I'm going to try to do with these guys this week. There is an endless amount of historical fact they dredge up from the past and twist it around and suck all the blood out of Indian people to paint their own pictures. He is a film critic and writes the #NativeNerd column. He'd rap with the extras and . anybody who was around. But unfortunately, the camera doesn't capture it; you just see my feet sticking up. There were so many locations. So, when you carve .. are you trying to recreate an exact image of another mask? And try to teach them to watch out for the warning signs. So what was it like to work with Michael Mann? Gregory Harrison . I: The dialects in Mohicans what are they? Interviewing is something we hadn't done ES: Oh yeah, Lake James. But you know, for what it's worth, Last of the Mohicans, it's a good movie. .. We'd sit and talk about playing guitar. So, after putting it off and saying "Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah". at the time I was running around a lot and too busy to It's not a monumental, you know, a paradigm change, but it effects them. E: I'll stay in movies until I can get enough money to buy a ranch in Montana, live the life of a hermit get 10 or 15 dogs sounds good, doesn't it? It doesn't matter what tribe we are from, what color we are, or what socioeconomic background we come fromand usually it is pretty shitty in Indian country. They haven't solved it. It was incredible. There is no question that the American Indians have been one of the most mistreated peoples in history, certainly on this continent. ES: Well, we did boycott the set one day because all the extras were getting shit on. I get to wear my hair in braids, a black bolero hat and chaps, and I get to ride! MOVIE TITLE: The Last of the Mohicans. MP: That's true. MP: Okay, many people are sincerely anxious to see you in more films. and I saw the most amazing art work in this school. Also the music by Daniel Lanois, a French-Canadian composer. I'm not trying to be antagonistic. No one really knows, it should have gone in there Hopefully, it will be on the extended version when it's on video. I: When the movie first premiered, did you think it would be such a hit as it has been? MP: What WAS filmed? Early life [ edit] Schweig was born in Inuvik, Northwest Territories. Then I thought about it and it's just that his work ethic is different than everybody else's. They had a pool and a waterfall. MP: Any plans of showcasing them, or giving them their day in the sun? ES: Yeah. Where's Marion? Okay, I just want to backtrack just a little bit. Madeleine Stowe. you have to bring to the forefront. I was born in Inuvik NWT in 1967 and moved south to Ontario with my adoptive family in the early 70s. You need an Indian to play an Indian and you need a Frenchman to play a Frenchman if you want a realistic looking movie. an Inuit duo! You know. psychopaths running around. E: Michael Mann was running around behind everyone in the editing room making them do it shouting, "What are you doing?". [Sad voice. Because they really need a sense of belonging and that sort of gives It will be cool because it will be the first time I'll be on a set and.. abstaining. MP: It seems sort of a bad time for a love scene anyway at that stage of the filming. So, by the time I thought it would stink! COLLECTIBLES || I was adopted at six months of age. We were particularly struck by his comments pertaining to children which seemed MP: Is this role already accepted or is it something you're considering? And that's not the way it's supposed to be. E: I caught that myself! a half, two years ago, Jessica State . she was 9 or 10 years old, about 200 yards from a ball field full of people, she was raped and had her throat cut and one of her hands cut off. ES: You know what? We love his portrayal of Uncas. It's kind of difficult.. You see a lot of, well, I scripted, which was more than "puppy love". ES: Yeah, all up and down there; all over here. They were the stars so they acted accordingly. For example, the beginning of the movie in the woods Day-Lewis' shirt appears and disappears! You know .. they just did whatever they had to do. Regarding Vern get here?" Things got ugly sometimes and I don't sit around like some of these lap dogs. And we didn't finish till, I don't know, 11, 12 something like that, anyway. ES: Yeah, they couldn't have two different love stories going on at once. I didn't see a hell of a lot of women in that movie. Enjoy! So, by the time of the interview, we felt comfortable with him, and he with us. EARLY I didn't think it would make this much money! Some people actually got hurt. People, Indian or otherwise, are not born to hate each other. They're very well We hope all who read this feel they've gained more insight, or a better I: Well, obviously you did most of all the work yourself, but did you have a stunt person? It starts with the individual person. ES: Tell them, "Thanks for your support. E: There was a lot of gratuitous violence in the movie and it could have been cut out. Hollywood will flog it to death. Of course, like you were saying before, the old films from the 50s were horrible .. the Indians were the bad guys and they had to be eradicated no matter what. There were also a few scenes cut out that should not have been. Georgia and me, Wes, Russell, Daniel, and Steven Waddington went out there for about a month and that was about as close to bonding we got. So. you know, we've got to take advantage of it and they'll have nothing left short of Last of the Dog Men which is a ludicrous concept for a film about Tom & Huck or Pontiac Moon if they were done differently, not Tom & Huck, but Pontiac Moon. GATHERINGS || it's not that big a deal whether they're historically correct or not because they never can be. I. I: Where there any significant problems with the movie? GATHERINGS || MP: Are the original masks, the ones you are recreating are they in museums in Russia? We have them back and now we can take care of them. MP: Okay. you've got Scots running around half naked and even in a period piece about Indians, just take The Last of the Mohicans for example .. You've got European born actors recreating roles from over 200 years ago. What's he like on the set?" It'll probably never happen, but if it came around, I would. I: So you made the movie in Richmond: now what? MP: Granted, we've held this film up to extreme scrutiny, but how do you reconcile this meticulous behavior with some of the flaws, like the blue cap and megaphone at Massacre Valley, that made it into the final cut? In He doesn't speak any English so it was hard to, it's hard to color a picture if you only have one color crayon. ES: No, not when I was there. But people still, especially kids who have this .. it changes the way they see things. You should do a mask. We don't have all of the character actors that we need, we don't have bad guys, we don't have comedians, and we don't have the bodies to fill all of the positions.
